Indonesia Calls for Action to Detect AI-Generated Content on Digital Platforms

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria has urged global social media platforms to implement free features that can identify AI-generated content. This move aims to help the public distinguish real content from hoaxes and deepfakes, which have become a growing concern.

"We hope that global social media platforms can also filter, or at least provide a feature to check whether a piece of content is made by AI or not. This feature should be free to use for the public," Patria stated.

Growing Threat of Deepfakes

Data from Sensity AI reveals a 550 percent increase in deepfake content over the past five years. Patria believes the actual number is likely higher due to the expanding capabilities of AI applications creating manipulated videos and images.

He emphasized that digital platforms possess the necessary computing power and algorithms to benefit the public by helping detect such content. The government is working to balance innovation with regulation to prevent AI misuse in spreading false information.

Legal Framework and Collaboration

Indonesia has established several legal instruments to address this challenge, including:

  • Electronic Information and Transactions Law
  • Personal Data Protection Law
  • Government Regulation on Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection

Additionally, the government is preparing new regulations to ensure AI is used ethically and responsibly. Collaboration efforts involve the Indonesian Anti-Hoax Society (Mafindo) and media outlets to support fact-checking programs against hoaxes and deepfakes.

"This digital space belongs to all of us so we need to work together closely to protect the public from hoaxes and negative content," Patria highlighted.

Mafindo's Role in Combating Deepfakes

Septiaji Eko Nugroho, Chairperson of Mafindo, pointed out the rapid growth of deepfakes in Indonesia. These manipulated contents are often used for online fraud and to influence public opinion, especially in political contexts.

Mafindo will continue partnering with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, media, and literacy activists to strengthen fact-checking efforts and counter misinformation on the internet.

Further Efforts and Resources

Indonesia’s government and civil society organizations are actively developing tools to detect deepfakes and expanding safeguards, particularly for children, against AI-driven scams.
