Indonesia Strengthens Youth Protection Amid Digital and AI Advancements

Indonesian Government’s Commitment to Protecting Youth in the Digital Age

South Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) – Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stressed the Indonesian government’s dedication to formulating regulations that shield the younger generation from the negative impacts of digitalization, including the rise of artificial intelligence (AI).

“As regulators, we must create rules that protect our youth amid digitalization,” she stated during an event at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in South Tangerang, Banten.

Balancing Risks and Opportunities of AI

Minister Hafid acknowledged that digitalization and AI advancements threaten traditional jobs, resulting in layoffs in some sectors. However, she emphasized that these technologies also create new job opportunities.

She encouraged young people to adopt a positive mindset towards AI and focus on acquiring new skills. Instead of dwelling on job losses, they should recognize the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) supported by digital tools.

Government’s Role in Ensuring Protection and Benefits

The minister assured that the government is committed to protecting communities and enabling them to benefit from digital technologies, including AI.

Currently, Indonesia is preparing an AI Road Map to guide the development of an inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem. Five priority sectors have been identified for AI development:

  • Health
  • Digital talent education
  • Bureaucratic reform
  • Smart city development
  • Food security

This approach aims to ensure that digital transformation enhances fairness and public welfare.

Further Initiatives

  • AI training programs are being promoted to bridge the digital skills gap.
  • Coding and AI subjects are being integrated into the national Sekolah Rakyat curriculum to prepare students for future challenges.
  • Utilization of AI is helping MSMEs expand their market reach, boosting economic growth.

These efforts collectively aim to equip Indonesia’s youth with the skills and protections needed to thrive in a digital environment shaped by AI and other emerging technologies.
