Indonesia Urges Universities to Embrace AI for Regional Innovation and Digital Growth
Indonesia urges universities to adopt AI addressing local needs like culture in Bali and fisheries elsewhere. Strong government-academic partnerships are key to digital growth amid infrastructure gaps.

Indonesia Pushes AI Adoption in Universities to Boost Regional Innovation
Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Digital, Meutya Hafid, urged universities to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in ways that address their region's specific needs. Speaking at Udayana University in Bali, she highlighted that AI applications should align with local priorities such as culture and tourism in Bali, or fisheries and food security in other areas.
"AI use must reflect the needs of each area. In Bali, for instance, Udayana University is focusing on culture and tourism," Hafid said. She stressed the crucial role universities have in developing digital talent and supporting the government as AI technology grows in importance.
Collaboration Essential for National Digital Growth
With a population of 280 million, Indonesia cannot rely on the government alone to advance AI adoption. Hafid called for strong partnerships between the government and academic institutions to prepare a workforce skilled in information technology and artificial intelligence.
However, challenges remain. About 15,000 villages still lack reliable internet access, and there is a shortage of clear AI regulations and trained professionals. These gaps underline the importance of focused efforts on digital infrastructure and education to boost AI capabilities nationwide.
Current Digital Landscape and Future Prospects
- Indonesia’s internet penetration stands at 80.66%, covering roughly 229 million people.
- The digital economy is projected to grow to USD 109 billion by 2025 and reach USD 366 billion by 2030.
Hafid emphasized that with improved infrastructure and a skilled talent pool, Indonesia has the potential to become a digital leader in Southeast Asia.
Udayana University’s AI Initiatives
Udayana University is ready to support AI development focused on Bali’s unique cultural and tourism sectors. The university is establishing an AI Center dedicated to cultural preservation and tourism innovation, with plans to expand into broader scientific research.
"Due to its position in Bali, Udayana University will concentrate on AI for culture and tourism, including cultural preservation and tourism development, and will establish an AI Innovation Study and Research Center," said Rector I Ketut Sudarsana.
