Indonesia's National Strategy for Ethical AI Utilization
Jakarta – Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, highlighted Indonesia's commitment to ethical, fair, and inclusive use of artificial intelligence (AI) through a national strategy and long-term roadmap. The approach focuses on ensuring AI development and application remain transparent and accountable.
Central to this strategy is the government's active monitoring of socio-economic factors, including labor mobility, the development of local talent, and protection of personal data. Patria emphasized the importance of strong data governance grounded in fairness, transparency, and accountability to uphold ethical standards.
Indonesia has demonstrated notable readiness to adopt AI technology. In 2024, the country became the first in Southeast Asia to complete UNESCO's Readiness Assessment Methodology for Artificial Intelligence (RAM AI), signaling its preparedness to leverage AI for economic and social advancement.
Despite these achievements, Indonesia has yet to be included in the AI Risk Repository compiled by MIT researchers, which catalogs more than three thousand global AI risk examples. Patria stressed the need to ensure Indonesia’s perspectives are represented in global frameworks addressing AI risks, especially given its large population and growing AI adoption.
Collaboration and Capacity Building
The deputy minister called for multi-sector collaboration to strengthen AI security research, policy development, digital skills training, and public awareness campaigns. Sharing knowledge, diverse viewpoints, and best practices is essential to improve AI governance, establish security standards, and build institutional capacity for AI safety.
- Advancing AI security research
- Formulating clear and fair AI policies
- Providing comprehensive digital skills training
- Raising public awareness on AI benefits and risks
Such cooperative efforts are crucial to managing AI technologies responsibly while maximizing their benefits for Indonesia’s society and economy.
