Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and Nokia Collaborate to Cut Energy Use and Support AI-Driven Sustainable Networks

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, a leading digital telecom operator in Indonesia, has implemented Nokia Energy Efficiency to lower energy consumption and carbon emissions across its nationwide radio access network (RAN). This solution, part of Nokia’s Autonomous Networks portfolio, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimize network energy use.

Nokia Energy Efficiency analyzes real-time traffic patterns to automatically power down idle or underused radio equipment during periods of low demand. It also features intelligent thermal management that reduces the energy needed for network cooling. Delivered as a SaaS solution, it avoids heavy upfront costs and onsite software maintenance, supporting greener network operations without adding operational complexity.

AI-Driven Energy Management Without Sacrificing Network Performance

This multi-vendor solution is designed to cut energy expenses and carbon footprint while maintaining network quality and customer experience. The deployment process is swift, allowing rollout within weeks. This move is a key part of Indosat's transformation from a traditional telecom operator into an AI-powered technology company focused on cloud platforms and sustainability.

By integrating automation and intelligence into network management, Indosat is improving efficiency, agility, and environmental responsibility throughout its infrastructure.

Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

“As data usage grows, managing resources efficiently becomes essential. This partnership underscores Indosat’s dedication to environmental responsibility and using AI to optimize performance while reducing emissions and energy use,” said Desmond Cheung, Director and CTO at Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.

Indosat’s sustainability efforts have earned regional recognition, including being the first Southeast Asian operator to achieve ISO 50001 certification for energy management. This highlights their commitment to minimizing environmental impact through operational excellence.

Successful Pilot and Full-Scale Deployment

Following a successful pilot that demonstrated the AI solution’s effectiveness in real network conditions, Nokia deployed its Energy Efficiency solution across Indosat’s RAN infrastructure in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Central, and East Java.

Henrique Vale, VP for Cloud and Network Services APAC at Nokia, stated, “We’re proud to support Indosat’s sustainability and environmental goals. Nokia Energy Efficiency showcases our ongoing investment in R&D to help customers simultaneously reduce energy costs and maintain network performance.”

Autonomous Networks Portfolio Enhances Network Intelligence

Nokia’s Autonomous Networks portfolio, including the Autonomous Networks Fabric solution, uses Agentic AI to provide advanced security, analytics, and operations management. This delivers operators a comprehensive, real-time network view, enabling cost reduction, faster value realization, and improved customer experience.

The Autonomous Networks Fabric acts as an intelligence layer that integrates observability, analytics, security, and automation across all network domains. It enables the network to operate as a unified, adaptive system regardless of vendor, architecture, or deployment model.

  • Reduces energy demand through AI-driven automation
  • Maintains network performance and customer experience
  • Supports sustainability goals with reduced carbon emissions
  • Offers quick deployment via SaaS model without heavy capital investment
  • Integrates multi-vendor equipment under a unified management system
