ITU to Host Major AI Summit in Geneva This July Alongside UN Governance Talks
The International Telecommunication Union will convene the seventh AI for Good Global Summit from July 7-10, 2026, at Geneva's Palexpo convention centre. The four-day event brings together government officials, industry leaders, academics, and civil society representatives to discuss how AI deployment can benefit developing countries and address global challenges.
The summit runs back-to-back with the inaugural UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, scheduled for July 6-7. UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres will facilitate the governance dialogue, which includes support from UNESCO and the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies.
What's on the agenda
The summit's opening day on July 7 features live demos, startup competitions, and hands-on workshops. The main programme launches July 8.
Sessions will cover AI standards and policy, including security for agentic AI systems, testing benchmarks, misinformation detection, and quantum technology applications. Organizers plan innovation competitions, machine-learning challenges, and awards recognizing AI applications in healthcare, education, food security, and disaster response.
A separate Quantum for Good track will examine quantum computing's potential across industries. The summit will also premiere RAISE, a documentary series executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio on AI solutions for urgent global problems.
A Youth Zone and AI Skills Coalition training sessions will focus on workforce development. Creative programming includes an AI art competition and film festival exploring AI and artistic work.
Who's involved
Switzerland co-convenes the summit. Microsoft and the Technology Innovation Institute serve as diamond-level sponsors. Gold sponsors include South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT and Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
The ITU coordinates with over 50 UN partners. Additional sponsors and partners include Google, Cisco, EY, and Lenovo.
Why this matters for communicators
PR and communications professionals should track this summit as a major venue where governments and industry will publicly stake positions on AI governance, standards, and deployment strategies. The event will generate significant policy announcements and establish frameworks that organizations will need to reference when communicating about AI initiatives.
The summit's focus on practical AI applications-rather than theoretical debates-means companies and institutions will be announcing concrete projects. Understanding these announcements and the governance context will be essential for PR teams managing AI-related communications.
For those working in AI for PR & Communications, this summit represents the convergence of policy, technology, and public messaging. The simultaneous governance dialogue signals that AI regulation and industry standards are no longer separate tracks.
Media accreditation is available through the ITU's official channels. Public registration is open.
