KAIST establishes advisory board to guide AI education strategy
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology launched an international advisory board and outlined its mid-to-long-term strategy for training AI professionals at a ceremony Monday in Seoul.
The KAIST College of AI Advisory Board includes University of Montreal professor Yoshua Bengio and New York University professor Cho Kyung-hyun, alongside representatives from Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom, Naver Cloud, Hyundai Motor Company, and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
The board will provide guidance on education, research, and international cooperation. The college plans to position itself as a platform that expands human intellectual capacity alongside AI rather than simply teaching AI technology, according to Dean Yoon Kuk-jin.
Education approach shifts focus to student participation
Undergraduate student representatives presented proposals on new educational possibilities during the ceremony, reflecting the college's strategy to treat students as active participants in designing research cultures rather than passive recipients.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said investment in AI talent is urgent as the field moves from generation to execution. "We will build South Korea's differentiated AI education system through active communication with students, who are the consumers of education," Bae said.
Broader institutional commitment
KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung described AI as a core driver of change across science, technology, industry, and society. The institution plans to support the college as it develops into an open platform for talent training and research innovation in South Korea with international partnerships.
The college aims to address industrial and social problems while establishing a responsible AI ecosystem, according to Yoon.
