KMC Manipal Introduces Department of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Udupi: Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal has launched a dedicated department for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, a first for any medical college in India. This marks a significant step in blending technology with medical education and practice.
The inauguration took place at Dr TMA Pai Auditorium, KMC Manipal, led by Lt Gen Dr MD Venkatesh, vice-chancellor of MAHE. He highlighted that the future of healthcare is closely linked with technology, emphasizing that this new department reflects a commitment to integrating AI research into clinical practice with a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach.
Vision and Objectives
Dr Sharath K Rao, pro vice-chancellor (health sciences), MAHE, outlined a comprehensive plan for AI implementation across healthcare. The initiative extends beyond diagnostics and treatment to reshape medical education by promoting AI literacy among students. He also stressed the importance of responsible innovation, ensuring AI tools are used with proper human oversight.
Interdisciplinary Approach and Training
Dr Anil K Bhat, dean of KMC Manipal and senior advisor to the department, explained that the new department will foster research, education, and clinical applications by combining expertise from medicine, engineering, and data science. The goal is to translate AI research into practical solutions for diagnosis, treatment, education, and public health.
