Korean Air and Anduril Join Forces to Develop AI-Enabled UAVs for Asia-Pacific
Korean Air has entered a technical partnership with U.S.-based defense tech firm Anduril Industries to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) tailored for the Asia-Pacific defense market. The collaboration merges Korean Air’s expertise in UAV systems with Anduril’s artificial intelligence and autonomous mission technologies. This agreement, signed on August 7 in Seoul, follows an earlier memorandum of understanding from April and marks a step toward concrete development and production plans.
Developing AI-Driven UAVs with Regional Focus
The partnership intends to create a “Korean-style” UAV model equipped with AI-powered autonomous capabilities. It includes licensed manufacturing of Anduril’s drones and AI surveillance technologies in Korea, with export rights throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The companies are also evaluating the launch of a local production hub, provisionally called Arsenal South Korea, to serve as a supply center for UAVs targeting regional defense clients.
A Korean Air spokesperson emphasized that as defense systems shift to AI-centric models, this collaboration could reshape UAV markets globally and improve operational efficiency for unmanned military forces.
Anduril’s Role in Defense Technology
Founded in 2017, Anduril Industries has quickly become a key player in defense technology, offering AI-powered unmanned systems, real-time analytics, and integrated command-and-control solutions. Their technology supports autonomous operation in complex environments and is used by the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Navy, and Australian Ministry of Defence. Applications range from border security to advanced naval missions.
Expanding Partnerships in Korea
The announcement coincided with Anduril’s Korean branch launch, hosted alongside the U.S. Commercial Service and U.S. Embassy in Seoul. The event also saw signing of agreements with other major Korean defense firms. This follows Anduril’s recent memorandum with HD Hyundai to co-develop autonomous AI naval systems, broadening its presence in Korea’s defense sector.
Looking Forward
The final contract between Korean Air and Anduril is expected early next year. This partnership highlights Korea’s push to become a significant player in AI-based defense systems. With AI at the core of modern military strategies, the collaboration could boost Korea’s position in unmanned aerial capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
