KT and Viettel Join Forces to Advance Vietnam’s National AI Strategy

Korean telecom leader KT and Vietnam’s state-owned Viettel Group have extended their collaboration with a “Strategic Partnership 2.0” agreement. This renewed partnership aims to accelerate Vietnam’s artificial intelligence transformation and contribute directly to the country’s national AI strategy.

The agreement was signed at KT’s Seoul headquarters by KT CEO Kim Young-shub and Viettel Chairman and CEO Tao Duc Thang. Building on an initial partnership established in May, the new deal outlines specific joint projects to promote AI adoption across key sectors.

Key Focus Areas of the Partnership

  • National AI Strategy and Sector-Specific AI Platforms: The partners will develop Vietnam’s overarching AI strategy and industry-tailored AI transformation (AX) platforms to drive targeted innovation.
  • Expansion of AX Business in Southeast Asia: Both companies aim to grow AI-driven business solutions beyond Vietnam, tapping into the wider Southeast Asian market.
  • AI-Powered Cybersecurity: A key initiative includes creating tools to detect and block cybersecurity threats such as phishing and deepfakes in real time, improving digital safety.
  • AI Talent Development: Establishing a Global AX Innovation Center to lead research and development efforts and train AI specialists will be essential to sustaining growth.

Building a National AI Model and Industry Solutions

A central part of this partnership is the creation of a national general-purpose AI language model customized for Vietnam’s language, culture, and administrative framework. Complementing this will be AI solutions designed for specific sectors including defense, media, and healthcare.

Leadership Perspectives

Kim Young-shub emphasized that the partnership represents a “meaningful collaboration that will help Vietnam secure future growth engines.” Tao Duc Thang highlighted that the combination of both countries’ technological strengths is expected to drive digital transformation across Vietnam’s industries.

This collaboration sets a clear path for Vietnam to strengthen its AI capabilities and expand its presence in the Southeast Asian tech landscape. For executives and strategists, it offers insights into how international partnerships can accelerate national tech agendas and build talent pipelines.
