Ethiopia hosts hackathon to develop AI solutions for African hospitality
Kuriftu Resorts, ALX Ethiopia, and WeVenture are running a two-day hackathon in April to challenge developers and entrepreneurs to build AI prototypes for hotels and resorts across Africa. The event takes place at two Addis Ababa venues: Capstone ALX Tech Hub on April 4 and Kuriftu African Village on April 18.
The hackathon targets early-career developers, startup founders, and students. Participants will work on AI solutions addressing real problems in African tourism and hospitality-from customer service improvements to revenue optimization and resource management.

Africa's tourism sector contributed over $168 billion to the continent's economy in 2024, representing 6.8% of GDP and supporting more than 24 million jobs, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. That scale means operational efficiency directly affects bottom lines across the industry.

What winning teams receive
The winning team gets 150,000 Ethiopian Birr in prize money plus a three-month incubation program through WeVenture. The program includes mentorship, technical support, and resources to move prototypes toward market deployment.
Organizers are negotiating with OpenAI to provide technical guidance for participants during development.
