Kyndryl expands AI skilling for India's public sector, students, and youth
Kyndryl announced an expanded set of programs to build AI capability across India's public sector, government schools, and youth communities. The effort supports its US$2.25 billion investment commitment from August 2025 and aligns with national digital and skilling priorities.
For government employees, the headline move is integration of Kyndryl's AI for Governance courses with the Government's Karmayogi iGOT Platform. The curated modules focus on AI fundamentals, responsible use, and cyber safety-helping officials spot practical AI opportunities and strengthen cyber resilience across institutions.
Program highlights
- Public sector AI readiness: AI and cyber courses on iGOT will help officials evaluate use cases, reduce manual workload, and adopt safer digital practices across departments.
- Foundational AI in government schools: A pilot in Varanasi and Ayodhya-focused on PM SHRI and Navodaya schools-targets age-appropriate AI education for 50,000 students and upskilling 1,000 teachers across 100 schools in two years.
- Youth as AI change-makers: Graduate students will be trained to drive AI literacy and support adoption of AI-enabled solutions in rural governance, agriculture, and livelihoods. Over three years, the initiative looks to enable 30,000 youth annually across several states.
Why this matters for public institutions
AI skills are moving from "nice-to-have" to operational necessity. With clear guidance on responsible use and cyber hygiene, teams can test small pilots, reduce routine backlogs, and improve service quality without adding headcount.
This approach builds trust: transparent guardrails, data protection by default, and human oversight at key decision points. The result is faster responses, fewer errors, and better risk control.
How to engage if you're in government
- Sign in to iGOT and enroll in the AI and cyber readiness modules as they go live. Map course topics to your department's service delivery goals.
- Form a small cross-functional working group (program, IT, legal/compliance). Pick one high-volume process as a pilot and define simple metrics: turnaround time, error rate, escalation count.
- Coordinate with IT and information security on data handling, access control, and vendor evaluation. Keep privacy and audit trails non-negotiable.
- Start with low-risk use cases: email triage, document summarization with human review, knowledge base search, and routine request routing.
- Embed responsible AI practices: human-in-the-loop checkpoints, bias checks, clear escalation paths, and regular model performance reviews.
- Run cyber drills tied to course content-phishing simulations, incident tabletop exercises, and patch cadence reviews-to lift baseline resilience.
What success could look like in your department
- Citizen queries auto-categorized and routed within minutes, with flags for edge cases that need human attention.
- Policy drafts and lengthy reports summarized for faster briefings, with citations back to source documents.
- Rural program data aggregated to surface anomalies early-improving targeting and reducing leakages.
- Consistent cyber hygiene: fewer phishing incidents, faster incident response, and clearer accountability across teams.
Voices and context
"Our mission is to support both India's digital growth and to help unlock progress at every level," said Lingraju Sawkar, President, Kyndryl India. "By strengthening the AI and cyber readiness of government officials, students and youth, we are helping build a confident, future-ready India that can lead with responsibility, resilience and innovation."
This push builds on prior discussions between the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and Kyndryl Chairman and CEO Martin Schroeter-centered on AI for government efficiency, empowerment of underserved communities, and skilling at scale.
