Coalition Calls for Stronger Intellectual Property Protections Amid AI Advances

A group of 35 creative and cultural organisations across Latin America has come together to demand better protection for the intellectual property rights of authors, artists, producers, and publishers. This coalition launched JusticIA, an initiative led by IFPI, aimed at urging governments, tech companies, and industry leaders to safeguard creators’ rights in the face of growing AI usage.

Generative artificial intelligence is making waves across creative fields, offering new tools and opportunities. However, this rapid development raises concerns about the potential erosion of copyright protections. In response, the coalition’s joint statement calls for clear transparency obligations on all generative AI providers. This means they must maintain accurate records of the materials used to train their models and share that information with rights-holders who have a legitimate claim.

Transparency and Accountability for AI Content

The coalition also demands that distributors clearly label content created entirely by AI. This measure ensures consumers are not misled about the origin of the content they consume. To highlight these demands, cultural and creative voices from Latin America gathered in a virtual event to urge policymakers to adopt clear rules that protect creators while promoting transparency.

Adriana Restrepo, IFPI regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized the need for balance: “It seems fair and appropriate that copyright and related rights be preserved, and that developers of AI systems report transparently on the content used to train their models. Our coalition stands united in this request to governments, legislators, and public policymakers.”

Invitation to Support the Movement

The coalition is calling on more industry groups, policymakers, and members of the public to endorse their statement. These endorsements will be shared directly with politicians throughout the region, amplifying the push for stronger intellectual property safeguards in the AI age.

For creatives looking to understand how AI impacts their work and how to protect their rights, staying informed about initiatives like JusticIA is essential. Awareness and advocacy can help ensure that technology serves creators without compromising their ownership and control.
