LexisNexis Introduces Protégé AI Assistant to Canadian Legal Professionals
LexisNexis® Legal & Professional has launched Protégé™ in Canada, adding to its AI-powered legal tools already available in the USA, Australia, and the UK. This personalized AI assistant integrates with the Lexis+ AI™ platform to help lawyers complete routine legal tasks more efficiently and accurately.
Protégé supports legal professionals in drafting documents, conducting research, and advising clients with greater speed. The assistant is built with strong security, compliance, and privacy standards, ensuring sensitive information remains protected throughout the workflow. Users will soon also be able to access Protégé directly within Lexis® Create+, the Microsoft Word drafting solution.
What Protégé Brings to Legal Workflows
- Full Document Drafting: Protégé can create customized transactional documents and verify its own output before review by lawyers. Documents are editable within Lexis+ AI or Microsoft Word.
- Litigation Materials: It generates precise drafts for motions, legal memos, arguments, and client correspondence, adapting content based on context.
- Workflow Suggestions: The AI recommends next steps depending on the uploaded document type, such as drafting memos or summarizing content.
- Query Assistance: Protégé proactively suggests refinements to queries, helping users reach their goals more efficiently.
- Secure Document Vaults: Users can store tens of thousands of legal documents in protected Vaults and perform AI tasks like summarization and research on them.
- Graphical Timelines: The assistant can generate timelines of events from uploaded documents to support case analysis.
Protégé operates with agentic AI capabilities, meaning it can handle multi-step tasks, review its own work, and suggest improvements. Human oversight remains central, ensuring the AI complements the lawyer’s expertise without replacing it.
Integration and Customization
Protégé can be customized by integrating with Document Management Systems (DMS) such as iManage and SharePoint. This enables lawyers to query their firm’s knowledge base, extract relevant clauses, and draft documents based on internal precedents, streamlining access to critical information.
Developed in collaboration with Canadian legal professionals, Protégé reflects practical feedback from the field. The platform combines proprietary extractive AI, which finds relevant data within documents, and generative AI, which creates new content based on user prompts.
Supporting Canadian Legal Practice
“Our aim is to equip every lawyer with an AI assistant that makes daily tasks easier and lets them focus on strategic work,” said Sam Puchala, President and General Manager of LexisNexis Canada. Protégé’s launch marks a significant step toward smarter legal workflows in the Canadian market.
