Manulife speeds up life insurance approvals with AI: what insurance pros need to know
Manulife Canada has rolled out a redesigned electronic application and an upgraded version of its Automated Underwriting Decision Engine, MAUDE. The result: automatic approvals for qualified applicants in as little as two minutes, with fewer questions and cleaner data capture.
For advisors, brokers, and underwriters, this means faster cycle times, fewer touchpoints, and a smoother client experience-without lowering the bar on risk selection.
The headline numbers
- Auto-approvals in about two minutes for qualified applicants.
- 58% of eligible cases were approved automatically by December, a 56% lift from pre-launch.
- Up to 40% fewer medical questions in the new application.
How the new flow works
The application uses reflexive, conversational questions-think first visit with a doctor-to get to accurate disclosures fast. MAUDE then makes a decision when the file is clear for auto-approval.
If it can't be cleared automatically, the case routes to a human underwriter seamlessly. No dead-ends, no duplicate input, just the right level of review.
What's new in the application
- Fewer medical questions: Up to 40% reduction by removing low-value "body system" items and tightening to best-practice essentials.
- Adaptive logic: Questions adjust to age, coverage amount, and responses to reduce friction.
- Drop-down menus: Standard options for common topics like travel and hobbies speed up accurate data entry.
- Medication and condition pick lists: Consistent inputs help MAUDE process cases more efficiently.
- Paramed flexibility: Advisors can choose whether to complete medical questions when a paramed is required.
Why it matters for distribution and underwriting teams
- Speed to issue: Shorter time-to-cover improves placement ratios and client satisfaction.
- Cleaner submissions: Standardized inputs reduce NIGOs and follow-ups.
- Better triage: Straightforward cases move quickly; underwriters focus on complex files.
- Transparency: Built on Manulife's Responsible AI Principles to support fair, explainable decisions.
Voices from Manulife
"Since launching last fall, advisor adoption has been strong. By December, more than half of eligible cases - 58 per cent - had approvals processed automatically through MAUDE, a 56 per cent increase from pre-launch," said Karen Cutler, Chief Underwriter, Manulife Canada. "By combining smarter questions with advanced AI, we're delivering a faster, more intuitive experience - without compromising on quality or protection."
"We've been doing this longer than anyone in the industry, and that experience has allowed us to build one of Canada's most advanced AI underwriting engines," said Jodie Wallis, Global Chief AI Officer at Manulife. "Every enhancement is grounded in our Responsible AI Principles, so advisors and clients can feel confident that decisions are accurate and responsible."
How to operationalize this (quick checklist)
- Refresh your intake script to match the reflexive flow; prep clients for concise, targeted questions.
- Capture meds, conditions, travel, and hobbies using the new pick lists to keep data consistent.
- Pre-identify case profiles likely to pass auto-approval (age, face amounts, clean histories).
- Set a playbook for escalations so underwriters get complete context on complex cases.
- Leverage demos and training on the Manulife Advisor Portal to get your team fluent fast.
Context: MAUDE, maturity, and what's next
Manulife launched its first AI underwriting tool in 2018 as AIDA, the first in Canada to make automatic underwriting decisions. That platform has evolved into MAUDE, now a more capable engine powering faster, consistent decisions.
The company has invested in AI since 2016 and expects over $1B in enterprise value from AI by 2027, with roughly one-fifth from efficiency. Manulife was also recognized as the #1 life carrier for AI maturity in the inaugural Evident AI Index for Insurance.
Why clients will feel the difference
Shorter applications, quicker approvals, less back-and-forth. If a case needs a human, it gets one-without restarting the process. That's less stress for families and stronger momentum for your pipeline.
