Mark Cuban: Use AI to Review Your Insurance Policies or You're Leaving Money on the Table
Most people don't understand their health insurance policies, and billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban says that's no longer acceptable. With AI tools readily available, there's no reason to skip this step.
"You are not smart if you don't run your insurance contracts through Claude or any other LLM and ask for a summary and issues you will face," Cuban wrote on X.
What You're Missing
Cuban was responding to someone who said they don't know a single person who has actually read and understood their health insurance policy. His point: AI chatbots can break down dense insurance documents, flag risks, and explain coverage in plain language.
Without that clarity, people routinely overpay for coverage they don't need, miss benefits they're entitled to, or get hit with avoidable out-of-pocket costs. The fine print costs real money.
Cuban recommends asking AI tools to summarize your policy, identify potential problems, and explain anything you don't understand. "Get that summary and suggestions," he wrote. "Ask it questions and to explain, simply, the things you don't understand."
How the System Creates the Problem
Cuban also criticized the broader insurance structure itself. Insurance companies design plans with deductibles "that most people can't afford," he said, forcing patients into debt just to access their own coverage.
Hospitals then loan patients money to cover deductibles-turning healthcare institutions into subprime lenders. Meanwhile, insurers "under pay, late pay and claw back in the contract," adding financial pressure on hospitals while earning interest on premiums through payment delays and denials.
Hospitals respond by adding facility fees and expanding billing practices. Cuban also pointed to internal inefficiencies: many hospital systems spend heavily on consultants and expansion while maintaining administrative staffs that outnumber doctors and earn more collectively.
The Practical Next Step
For insurance professionals, the takeaway is straightforward. Policyholders now have tools to understand their coverage without relying on customer service calls or broker explanations. AI can surface hidden costs and potential coverage gaps before they become problems.
Cuban's message was direct: "There are no more excuses."
