Medical experts call for AI and biosensor integration in Nigerian healthcare
Medical researchers and policymakers meeting at the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo State say Nigeria's healthcare system needs to combine physiology with artificial intelligence and biosensors to improve diagnostics and treatment.
The two-day Bio-Synergy Conference brought together medical researchers, technologists, and policymakers to discuss practical ways to modernise the nation's healthcare infrastructure. The event also marked the 150th anniversary of The Physiological Society.
Prof. Chukwuemeka Nwokocha, who delivered the keynote address, said AI is already changing how researchers develop plant-derived treatments. "AI is transforming natural product research by enabling safer and more effective plant-derived treatments," he said.
The integration of AI in this field could unlock safer drug options from natural sources, a significant consideration for healthcare systems with limited resources.
Dr. Mega Oyovwi emphasized that progress requires three elements working together: technology, people, and unified data systems. Without coordination across these areas, technology alone delivers limited benefit.
The University of Medical Sciences Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, said the conference reflects the institution's commitment to using new technologies to address critical health challenges. He positioned the event as part of efforts to create sustainable healthcare solutions for Nigeria.
For healthcare professionals, the takeaway is practical: AI for Healthcare and AI Research Courses are becoming essential skills as medical institutions integrate these tools into diagnostics and drug development.
