Medtiles sets a new standard for medical training with AI
Medtiles is a new FEUP spin-off built by a multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of engineering, medicine and education. After early work applying AI in industry, the team asked a simple question that changed their direction: can generative AI make medical training more practical and more personal? That question became Medtiles and its flagship product, the Medtiles Tutor.
The platform delivers realistic, adaptive clinical simulations where healthcare professionals practise critical decision-making with repetition and instant feedback. Educators can shape cases to their context, and teams can drill scenarios safely before stepping into a real clinical situation.
What the Medtiles Tutor does
Clinicians and students work through text-, image- and video-based clinical cases adjusted to their level and role. Lab values, brain CTs, and functional videos (like gait analysis) are all in play. The Tutor adapts, tests decisions under pressure, and provides feedback that sticks.
Educators can build or upload content, set language, difficulty and constraints, and quickly create their own cases. It's flexible enough for undergrad courses, residency training, skills labs and CME.
Why this matters: stroke is a clear example
Each year, there are 12.2 million new stroke cases worldwide and seven million deaths. Roughly two million neurons die every minute without treatment. Every 15 minutes saved can improve the chance of survival without disability by 4%.
Medtiles focuses on timing and accuracy. Teams can rehearse stroke pathways across multiple scenarios, measure decision speed, correct errors, and repeat until performance is consistent.

How it works under the hood
The "secret" is the blend of generative AI with realistic, adaptive clinical scenarios. Users don't just study-they decide, act and learn from immediate feedback in a safe environment.
On the roadmap: deeper Agentic AI workflows and health-specialised models to improve reasoning, safety and traceability. Content remains fully customisable for educators and departments.
Early impact in clinics and classrooms
In partnership with Neurotalks, more than 80% of professionals using the Tutor reported better knowledge retention. Testbeds at Hospital da Luz and collaborations with the Catholic University of Portugal's School of Nursing show the platform works in both clinical and academic settings.
Medtiles also received Portugal's National Innovation Agency (ANI) R&D Seal, a nod to its contribution to AI in healthcare training.
Built with FEUP's support
FEUP has been more than a starting point-it's been a catalyst. Through the Research and Innovation Support Unit (INOV) and initiatives like BIN, DEEPINVENTHEI and Conception X, the team gained mentoring, investor access and visibility. That backing helped turn research into a working product.
What's next
Medtiles is preparing to scale the Tutor with new partnerships across pharmaceutical and medtech companies. The team plans to enter Spain, Italy and Brazil, while continuing to strengthen the technology and content ecosystem.
The team behind Medtiles
Medtiles brings together engineering, medicine and education across a six-person team. Founding members include FEUP alumni Liliana Antão and João Reis, who met at FEUP's Digital and Intelligent Industry Lab (DIGI2) within SYSTEC. Neurologists Sandra Moreira (CEO) and Luís Ribeiro are part of the core clinical leadership, alongside FEUP students Nelson Neto and António Abílio.
The company keeps close ties to FEUP through three ongoing master's theses that use Medtiles as their research base-ensuring the product grows with fresh evidence and current practice.
Practical ways to use Medtiles in your program
- Run high-stakes scenarios (stroke, sepsis, rare diseases) with measurable timing and accuracy.
- Standardise training across cohorts while keeping cases relevant to local protocols.
- Embed cases into courses, residency rotations, skills labs or CME.
- Author your own cases with specific constraints, languages and difficulty levels.
