Meta Acquires Dreamer Team to Bolster AI Agent Development

Meta has hired the founding team of Dreamer, an AI startup launched this year, to accelerate its work on autonomous agents. The acquisition includes co-founder Hugo Barra, who previously led Meta's virtual reality division, along with David Singleton and Nicholas Jitkoff. They will join Meta Superintelligence Labs under Chief AI Officer Yann LeCun.

Dreamer investors will receive returns exceeding their initial investment, according to a person familiar with the deal. The startup raised $56 million at a $500 million valuation in 2024. Dreamer will remain a separate legal entity, and Meta has secured a non-exclusive license to its technology.

Singleton confirmed the deal on LinkedIn, noting that he had shown Dreamer's product to Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year. "We quickly realized that we share the same vision for the future: empowering billions of people to create software to improve their lives," Singleton wrote.

Strategic Focus on AI Agents

AI agents-autonomous software that performs tasks on behalf of users-have become central to Meta's strategy. During earnings calls in January, Zuckerberg said improvements in agents were "quite significant," with engineers already using them for coding assistance.

Meta's Chief AI Officer said the company is "building truly personalized and always-on agents that can be integrated across platforms and wearable devices." The statement reflected confidence in the technology's potential.

This hire follows Meta's December acquisition of Manus, an AI agent company, for over $2 billion. Earlier this month, Meta also acquired Moltbook, a social network for AI agents.

Executive Experience Driving the Move

The Dreamer team brings substantial experience from major tech companies. Singleton previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Stripe and Vice President of Engineering for Google's Android products. Barra held the role of Vice President of Product Management for Android at Google before moving to Xiaomi and then Meta.

Jitkoff was the lead designer of Google Chrome OS. The combination of product, engineering, and design expertise positions the team to advance Meta's agent capabilities across its platforms.

For executives and strategy professionals tracking AI investments, understanding how companies like Meta structure AI acquisitions-acquiring talent and technology while maintaining legal independence-offers insight into how enterprise AI strategy is being executed at scale.
