Meta releases new AI model as competition intensifies
Meta unveiled Muse Spark on Wednesday, its first major model release since assembling a team of AI researchers tasked with competing directly against OpenAI and Google. The model, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs and led by Alexandr Wang from Scale AI, will power Meta's AI assistant and eventually reach WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and the company's AI glasses.
Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought Wang on board to lead the new superintelligence team. The company described Muse Spark as "small and fast by design" while capable of reasoning through questions in science, math, and health.
The release marks Meta's second major push after last year's Llama models failed to gain significant traction. Larger models are already in development, Meta said.
The competitive pressure
Google moved ahead of rivals in November with Gemini 3, which demonstrated strong coding and research abilities. OpenAI followed with updates to GPT-5. Meta's spending on AI infrastructure and talent reflects the stakes in a market where model performance differences can determine market position.
For developers and IT teams, the release signals Meta's commitment to building AI capabilities directly into its core products. Whether Muse Spark gains adoption among developers depends on its actual performance on real-world tasks and how it integrates with existing development workflows.
