Meta Plans AI Pendant and Work-Focused Wearables to Reverse Hardware Losses
Meta will begin testing an AI pendant within the next year as part of a broader push to expand its wearables business, according to an internal memo obtained by The Information. The company also plans to launch new AI glasses and introduce a service called "Wearables for Work" aimed at business users.
The announcement comes as Meta's hardware division, Reality Labs, reported a $4.03 billion loss in the first quarter on just $402 million in revenue. Meta declined to comment on the report.
Sales Targets and Product Expansion
Meta aims to sell 10 million wearable devices in the second half of 2026 by introducing new products and expanding into additional countries, The Information reported, citing the memo from Alex Himel, Meta's vice president of wearables.
The company currently partners with EssilorLuxottica brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to produce AI-powered smart glasses. Last year, Meta acquired Limitless, a startup that makes a pendant-style device capable of recording and transcribing conversations, to accelerate development of next-generation wearables.
What This Means for Development Teams
The expansion signals Meta's commitment to hardware as a core business despite significant losses. Teams working in AI for Product Development and AI for IT & Development will likely see increased focus on wearable form factors and enterprise applications.
