Meta Funds $115M Training Program to Fill Data Center Construction Labor Gap
Meta Platforms and Associated Builders and Contractors launched a $115-million workforce initiative to train construction workers for data center projects as labor shortages threaten to slow AI infrastructure buildout. The program, called America's Workforce Academy, will operate in Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio and Texas-states where Meta is building major data center facilities.
Participants will earn credentials in electrical work, mechanical systems, plumbing, welding and fiber installation. The five-week program covers career readiness, safety and craft training, with Meta covering scholarships, travel, housing and living expenses. Accepted candidates receive conditional job offers from contractors before training begins.
Meta fully funds the first-year investment and said graduates will receive guaranteed job offers from participating contractors. The company called it the largest private-sector skilled-trades training commitment with a job guarantee in U.S. history.
Why Construction Labor Shortages Are Acute for Data Centers
Data center construction spending hit a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $50.7 billion in April, up 28.1% from a year earlier. More than 90% of contractors report difficulty finding enough qualified workers to hire, according to Associated General Contractors of America surveys.
Data center projects feel labor shortages differently than other construction segments. Owners typically pay premiums to keep projects on schedule, driving up wages across the sector. One highway contractor told AGC that dump-truck-driver pay in his region doubled as workers shifted to nearby data center work.
Meta President and Vice Chairman Dina Powell McCormick said in March that the U.S. may ultimately need roughly 500,000 electricians to support projected AI infrastructure growth.
Where the Academy Will Operate
Training centers will operate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; and Houston. These locations align with Meta's major data center developments.
- Louisiana: Meta's Hyperion campus in Richland Parish will require more than 5,000 skilled trade workers at peak construction.
- Indiana: Meta is building an $800-million data center in Jeffersonville and planning a separate $10-billion AI campus near Indianapolis with a projected 4,000-person construction workforce at peak.
- Ohio: Home to Meta's New Albany data center operations.
- Texas: Meta operates facilities in Fort Worth and Temple and recently announced an AI data center project in El Paso.
Turner Construction Co. and Clayco Inc. are among the contractors that have worked on Meta data center projects.
Broader Workforce Development Context
Meta said it currently has 27 data centers operating or under construction in the U.S. The company's data center development program has supported more than 45,000 construction jobs since 2011.
CBRE, a real estate and project management firm, is serving as the academy's primary program manager, handling recruitment, screening, onboarding and training administration.
For construction professionals managing labor planning and operations, understanding these workforce initiatives is essential as data center projects continue to reshape regional labor markets. AI for Real Estate & Construction resources can help teams navigate the operational challenges that accompany rapid infrastructure growth.
