Miami Dade College Opens AI Innovation Hub on Kendall Campus

Miami Dade College opened a 7,000-square-foot AI Innovation Hub on its Kendall campus this week, adding to its existing AI centers and expanding hands-on training for students across the county.

The hub houses six specialized labs: a Cognitive Applications Lab, an AI Applications Studio, a Metaverse Arch Studio, a Cybersecurity Classroom, a Network Solutions Lab, and a RoboTech Lab. An interactive installation at the entrance demonstrates real-time conversational intelligence using live audio and AI processing.

MDC President Madeline Pumariega said the space was designed for applied learning rather than theory. "Students aren't just studying AI, they're building, testing, and collaborating in an environment that mirrors how these technologies are actually used in the workplace," she said.

Expanding AI Training Across Campus

The Kendall hub is the third major AI center at MDC. The college opened an AI Center on its North Campus in 2022 and another on its Wolfson Campus in 2023.

To date, MDC has trained more than 4,000 students in AI skills and provided professional development to more than 1,000 faculty members. The college offers certificates, an associate degree in science, and Florida's first bachelor's degree in applied AI through its School of Engineering and Technology.

The hub prepares students for careers in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, networking infrastructure, robotics engineering, and immersive technologies for architecture and design.

Industry Partnerships and Resources

MDC developed the hub through partnerships with Intel, Google, Microsoft, IBM, OpenAI, the National Science Foundation, and the Mark Cuban Foundation. Students gain hands-on experience with tools and platforms used by global technology companies.

Pumariega emphasized access. "Our responsibility is to make sure those opportunities are accessible across our entire county, not limited to the urban core or to a select few," she said.

For educators interested in integrating AI into their teaching, AI for Teachers offers structured pathways for professional development. MDC's work also aligns with broader efforts in AI for Education.
