Michigan schools get guidance on responsible classroom AI use
The Michigan Department of Education released new recommendations to help school districts implement artificial intelligence in classrooms while protecting student privacy and ensuring the technology supports learning.
The guidance encourages educators to teach students how to use AI effectively rather than avoid it entirely. State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko said the focus is on appropriate use: "AI can be a good learning and teaching tool if used properly. I use AI. But we need to make sure our educators and our students understand AI and know how to use it appropriately."
School districts across Michigan should begin or continue discussions about AI's role in their classrooms, according to the department. The recommendations balance three priorities:
- Keeping AI use purposeful and tied to learning goals
- Maintaining strict protections for student data and privacy
- Building AI literacy among both teachers and students
The department's AI for Education guidance is available on the Michigan Department of Education's Artificial Intelligence webpage.
