Michigan State launches online master's in educational statistics and AI

Michigan State University will accept applications for a new master's degree in Educational Statistics and AI, with the first cohort starting Fall 2026. The 30-credit program is designed for educators, researchers, and administrators who need to apply data science and AI responsibly in schools and districts.

The program is the first of its kind at MSU and will be offered online and in synchronous formats to accommodate working professionals. Students will complete a capstone project applying AI and statistics to real-world educational problems.

Faculty and curriculum

Kenneth Frank, a MSU Research Foundation Distinguished Professor, serves as interim program director. Porsche Fischer coordinates the program. The faculty includes scholars who lead MSU's established Ph.D. program in Measurement and Quantitative Methods.

The curriculum combines rigorous statistical methods with practical AI applications. Courses will remain consistent, but syllabi and projects will evolve as technologies advance.

"We built this program so that our students don't just adopt and adapt to AI in education. We want them to lead the use of it," Frank said.

Who should apply

The program targets working professionals who can apply what they learn directly to their current roles. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with priority consideration for the first cohort.

Graduates will be prepared to lead data-driven decision-making and ethical AI deployment in PreK-12 and higher education settings. For educators looking to develop these skills, consider exploring AI learning paths for teachers and resources on data analysis to build foundational knowledge before applying.
