Microsoft AI Tools Save UK Government Workers 26 Minutes Daily, Study Finds
A recent three-month trial involving 20,000 UK civil service employees revealed that Microsoft 365 Copilot's AI tools helped save government workers an average of 26 minutes per day. This time savings could translate into roughly two extra weeks annually for other important tasks.
The trial included participants from key departments such as the Ministry of Justice, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and a department handling welfare, pensions, and child services. Employees used AI to assist with drafting documents, managing emails, scheduling meetings, and creating presentations.
Improving Efficiency Across Government
This study is part of a wider effort to integrate technology innovations within UK government operations. The goal is to streamline workflows, reduce costs, and improve public service delivery. UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the benefits during a keynote presentation at SXSW London, emphasizing how AI helps reduce red tape and enables smarter work.
Similar efforts are underway in the United States. Joe Nguyen, Director of Washington State’s Department of Commerce and a former Microsoft manager, developed his own AI assistant using OpenAI technology. His tool simplified contract compliance processes, shrinking days of work into minutes. Nguyen aims to demonstrate AI’s practical value to encourage adoption across other state agencies.
Positive Feedback and Some Concerns
The majority of UK government employees responded positively to the AI tools. In the study, 82% said they wouldn’t want to give up using them. While 17% reported no time savings, 14% saved an hour or more daily. Employees with dyslexia and dyspraxia noted that the tools made tasks easier and improved their output.
However, some criticisms remain. Concerns focus on AI’s limitations in handling complex or nuanced information. There is also caution about projects like predictive policing algorithms, which critics argue risk reinforcing biases.
What This Means for Government Staff
Adopting AI tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot can free up valuable time by automating routine tasks. This allows government workers to focus more on strategic and impactful work. Understanding and integrating these tools could improve productivity and job satisfaction.
