Microsoft Introduces AI-Powered Copilot Mode in Edge Browser

Microsoft has launched an experimental Copilot Mode in its Edge browser that integrates AI features to streamline browsing. This new mode offers a single input box that combines chat, search, and web navigation for a more unified user experience.

With user permission, Copilot Mode can access all open tabs to better understand the context and assist with tasks such as comparing information or making decisions. Future updates will enable it to use browsing history and stored credentials, potentially handling complex tasks like booking reservations.

The AI assistant operates in a dynamic pane alongside the original webpage, allowing users to request quick actions like converting recipe measurements or translating text without losing sight of the current page.

Currently available on Edge for Windows and Mac in select markets, Copilot Mode is free for a limited time. Microsoft emphasizes that this is an early step in integrating AI into everyday browsing, with ongoing improvements planned.

This release comes amid rising competition from AI startups developing natural language-based tools aimed at changing how people access information online. It also follows Microsoft’s recent announcement transforming Windows into an AI-driven platform, signaling a shift in how the company approaches software innovation.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described this phase as the “middle innings” of a platform shift, highlighting the importance of ongoing AI integration in technology products.

Western Union Leverages Stablecoins and AI to Boost Efficiency

Western Union is turning to stablecoins and artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency amid economic and political challenges. The company reported a 4% revenue decline in Q2, impacted by slowed retail business in North America and sanctions affecting operations in Iraq.

Under its Evolve 2025 strategy, Western Union is focused on enhancing retail experiences, expanding digital services, and optimizing operations. A key part of this plan involves adopting stablecoins to reduce friction in cross-border payments, streamline crypto-fiat conversions, and minimize reliance on intermediaries.

Stablecoins are viewed as an opportunity to expand payment options rather than a threat. Western Union aims to integrate crypto capabilities directly into its digital wallet to offer more versatile services.

In addition, AI is being used to reduce costs and complexity across various business areas, including marketing, customer service, and operations. According to the company, AI is applied strategically to increase speed and intelligence in workflows.

Despite the overall revenue dip, growth in Western Union’s Branded Digital business (up 6%) and Consumer Services segment (up 39%) helped offset losses. The Consumer Services growth was supported by the acquisition of Eurochange Limited, which expanded Western Union’s footprint in the U.K. foreign exchange market and enhanced its Travel Money offerings in Europe.

What This Means for IT and Development Professionals

  • For developers: The integration of AI directly into widely used tools like browsers and payment platforms signals more opportunities to build AI-powered features and services.
  • For IT teams: Managing AI components that access sensitive data, such as browsing history or credentials, will require updated security policies and monitoring.
  • For business strategists: Stablecoins and AI are becoming practical levers to reduce costs and improve customer experience in financial services, suggesting a growing need to explore blockchain and AI technologies.
