Microsoft releases Legal Agent for contract work in Word

Microsoft introduced Legal Agent on Thursday, an AI tool built into Word that handles contract review and editing tasks for legal teams.

The tool analyzes complex legal documents, drafts edits, and reviews contracts against internal standards. It works within Word's tracked changes feature, allowing lawyers to see revisions as they're made.

Microsoft said in a blog post that general-purpose AI tools fall short for legal work because they don't follow the structured processes legal teams use to evaluate risk and maintain consistency. Legal Agent is designed to handle repetitive document work so lawyers can focus on decisions that require judgment.

Each suggestion includes supporting citations that users can review and approve before accepting changes.

The tool is available now through Microsoft's early access Frontier program on Word for Windows desktop. Learn more about AI for Legal professionals and how Office Tools integrate AI capabilities.
