Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Launches News Literacy Training for Teachers

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on July 28th a new training program aimed at improving news and artificial intelligence literacy among elementary, middle, and high school teachers. This initiative leverages the news big data analysis system BigKinds and the generative AI tool BigKinds AI, developed in partnership with the Korea Press Foundation (KPF).

BigKinds is a platform that has accumulated over 100 million news articles from major domestic media companies since 1990. It offers features like core word flow and related word analysis. Starting in 2024, it will introduce an AI-powered chatbot to provide a more user-friendly experience for educators and learners.

Why News Literacy Training Matters

As digital information spreads faster than ever, issues like confirmation bias and fake news have become more prevalent. This training addresses these challenges by emphasizing the importance of news literacy education. Teachers will learn how to effectively use big data and AI to guide students in critically engaging with news content.

Workshop and Training Details

On July 25th, the Korea Press Foundation hosted a BigKinds-based news literacy workshop at the press center. About 50 teachers from various educational levels participated. Experts from the EdTech teacher research group demonstrated how to use BigKinds in the classroom and shared practical lesson examples.

The workshop also included a session on the Electronic Newspaper Utilization Education Program (eNIE), and participants collaborated on designing news literacy lesson plans.

Upcoming Training Sessions

Between July and September, the Media Research Institute of the Korea Press Foundation will offer 12 sessions of the BigKinds-based news literacy teacher training. Each session will host approximately 30 teachers who will engage in four hours of lectures and hands-on practice.

The training covers theories on news big data and generative AI, with practical exercises such as sharing lesson examples and designing classroom-ready plans. This hands-on approach ensures teachers can confidently integrate news and AI literacy into their teaching.
