The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) will launch the 2026 Smart Construction Challenge on June 15 to accelerate digital adoption and improve on-site safety. The competition offers a 300 million won prize pool to teams developing artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital modeling solutions that prevent accidents and upgrade infrastructure quality.

Competition structure and categories

Major public institutions will co-host the seventh annual event, including the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH), Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), Korea National Railway, and the Korea Authority of Land & Infrastructure Safety (KALIS). These organizations provide a direct pathway for winning technologies to be tested and commercialized in actual field environments.

The challenge features five specialized tracks. The safety management category, led by KALIS, seeks hardware and software to prevent high-risk accidents like worker falls or being crushed by falling objects. The complexes and housing track, run by LH, focuses on productivity tools such as drones, 3D printing, and digital twin models.

KEC will evaluate AI models for performance prediction and damage analysis across the full road life cycle. The railways category targets robotics and building information modeling (BIM) tailored for train environments. Finally, KICT will lead the BIM category, centering on new possibilities for BIM in the age of Generative AI and LLM, specifically addressing design automation and quality verification.

Prizes and commercial support

First-place winners in each category will receive the Grand Innovation Award, carrying a 30 million won prize and recognition from the MOLIT minister. Three additional teams will earn public institution head awards worth 10 million won each.

Beyond cash, corporate winners gain tangible business advantages. Companies honored with the minister's award receive extra points when applying for government-designated smart construction small giant status. They also secure priority access to public institution sales channels and opportunities to run pilot demonstrations at active construction sites.

Exhibition and application details

Organizers will display winning technologies at the 2026 Smart Construction Expo, running for three days starting November 25 at KINTEX in Ilsan. The event will remain open to industry officials and the general public.

Corporations, research institutes, and individuals can apply by downloading forms from the official website. The deadline for email submissions is July 14.

Kim Myeong-jun, director-general for Technology and Safety Policy at MOLIT, said, "With the advent of the Generative AI era, it is a more critical time than ever for the construction industry to improve its fundamentals through technological innovation." He added, "We look forward to strong interest and participation from corporations, institutions, and experts with creative ideas that will lead a great transition in the construction industry through this challenge."

Why this matters for real estate and construction professionals

This challenge signals a clear shift in how public infrastructure projects will evaluate and procure technology. For professionals in the field, prioritizing AI for Real Estate & Construction is no longer just an operational efficiency play; it is becoming a prerequisite for winning government contracts and securing pilot funding. Teams that can prove their tools reduce falls, automate design checks, or predict maintenance failures will gain a direct pipeline to South Korea's largest infrastructure buyers.
