Monotype Launches AI Search: Natural-Language Font Discovery for Creatives
WOBURN, Mass., Feb. 26, 2026 - Monotype introduced AI Search, a conversational font search tool built to help you find the right typeface by describing mood, brand traits, or use case in plain language. It's live now on MyFonts in the U.S. and U.K., and on Monotype Fonts in English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Instead of forcing your ideas through rigid filters and tags, you describe what you want. AI Search turns that prompt into curated, context-aware recommendations drawn from Monotype's library and 4,500+ foundry partners.
What changed-and why it matters
Font hunts shouldn't feel like guesswork. "Finding the right font shouldn't feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. AI Search changes the creative workflow for the better," said Mike Matteo, Chief Typography Officer at Monotype.
With semantic reasoning, previews, and inventory-aware results, you get options that match your intent-and you see why each one fits. Less friction, more time designing.
Key features
- Curated results: Recommendations sourced from Monotype's global library and foundry partners.
- Instant previews: Quick visual checks to compare options fast.
- Semantic fit: Clear explanations of why a font matches your brief.
- Inventory-aware: Only shows fonts you can actually license and use.
Proof it saves time
Monotype reports teams can reclaim up to 35% of creative time by streamlining selection. In their research, 62% of organizations using AI and automation saw boosts in both efficiency and creativity.
Typography drives decisions: 82% of creatives rank it in their top three considerations, and 85% say a distinctive font is critical to defining a brand's identity. Faster, smarter search removes a bottleneck that hits every project.
How creatives actually use it
Artist Max Trutt used AI Search after his Il Gattopardo residency to turn a loose idea into a confident typographic direction for a new "livre d'artiste." Working in natural language let him explore tonal shifts without wrestling with technical filters.
The process surfaced FF Bokka™-playful with historical weight-for pairing with his acrylic illustrations, and the cleaner, understated Brother 1816 for text-only pages. The resulting 14-piece work, "Look, No Humans (Animal's March)," was developed with Peter Trudolubovs.
"Being able to search by mood and emotion, following the flow state of your design instincts and concepts, will shorten and enhance the search process," said Terrance Weinzierl, Executive Creative Director at Monotype. "It's search that speaks your language, turning vague ideas into precise font choices."
Try it-prompts that work
- "Friendly, geometric sans with a tech-forward vibe for startup branding, needs strong legibility on mobile."
- "Editorial serif with quiet authority for a long-form features section; modern, not cold."
- "Humanist sans for accessibility guidelines; high x-height, clear forms, works well at 12-14 pt."
- "Playful display face with 1970s poster energy; avoid kitsch, needs alternates for headlines."
- "Global brand type pair: warm serif for headlines + neutral sans for UI, multilingual support required."
Availability
AI Search is available on MyFonts in the U.S. and U.K. and within Monotype Fonts in multiple languages.
Why this helps teams
- Speed and efficiency: Cuts search time and reduces workflow interruptions so you move from concept to layout faster.
- Relevance and precision: Results that match intent, not just tags.
- Confidence and clarity: Explanations and previews that make approvals easier.
- More creative range: Explore by mood, personality, or brand expression in your own words, then refine with conversational follow-ups.
