Published in Nature, the work led by James Evans and colleagues shows how AI amplifies individual capacity while concentrating collective attention. As AI optimizes what's measurable, scientists migrate to high-signal datasets where returns are obvious-and drift away from uncertainty, messy data, and new instrumentation.

The authors describe "lonely crowds": popular topics that attract many papers but exhibit weaker interaction among those papers. The result is overlapping work and a contraction in knowledge extent, as groups converge on the same solutions to known problems.

Why this happens

Optimization favors what looks tractable. Benchmarks, leaderboards, and common datasets create clear incentives. Models trained on yesterday's data push researchers toward yesterday's questions with today's tools.

  • Track breadth. Monitor diversity of topics, datasets, and coauthor networks; set targets so success doesn't collapse into a single cluster.
  • Incentivize cross-pollination. Rotate people across subfields, co-fund mixed-methods projects, and value negative or divergent results.
  • Credit data work. Make datasets, sensors, and protocols first-class research outputs in promotion and grant decisions.
  • Tune evaluation windows. Allow longer timelines for exploratory projects so they can compete with fast, benchmark-driven publications.

How to use AI without shrinking your scope

  • Point models at the margins: surface anomalies, residuals, and failure cases first. Treat "weird" as a lead, not noise.
  • Mix models and methods: combine symbolic reasoning, causal inference, simulation, and qualitative checks with LLM workflows.
  • Regularly swap datasets. If your pipeline depends on one canonical source, schedule cycles where half the work uses alternative or newly gathered data.
  • Set a "novelty quota." Each quarter, allocate time and budget to a question, measure, or population your group has never studied.
