New Artificial Intelligence Degrees and Certificates Expand Opportunities at WVU Statler College

New AI Educational Programs at Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources

The West Virginia University Board of Governors has approved an online Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence at the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Hosted within the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (LCSEE), the program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers AI, machine learning, computer science, and data science.

LCSEE Chair Anurag Srivastava explained that the program’s goal is to provide advanced knowledge in AI and related fields, preparing students for careers in research, industry, or further academic study. The initiative also enhances WVU’s role in AI through interdisciplinary research, strategic partnerships, and workforce development.

Beyond the MS degree, new certificates and specialized concentrations will be available for undergraduate and graduate students. These offerings support exploration of AI technologies and their applications across engineering disciplines.

Advanced Graduate Offerings

The online MS in Artificial Intelligence requires 30 credit hours and offers flexible pacing, allowing completion within one to three years. The curriculum balances foundational theory with applied topics, and includes a variety of electives suited for working professionals and diverse student backgrounds.

  • Fully online format for accessibility
  • Reasonable tuition fees
  • Options for part-time or accelerated study
  • Curriculum developed with input from industry, alumni, and faculty

LCSEE Associate Chair Donald Adjeroh highlighted the increasing presence of AI across sectors and the need for professionals trained in its core concepts and applications. Ashish Nimbarte, Chair of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, noted that the program addresses growing demand for AI expertise in areas like digital health, cybersecurity, energy systems, robotics, and automation.

Enrollment opens for Spring 2026. Details on applications are available through the WVU Catalog.

Graduate Certificate in Digital Health

This certificate integrates AI, machine learning, and data science to tackle challenges in healthcare and human health. Students learn to evaluate and apply digital technologies that improve health outcomes and system efficiency.

New Areas of Emphasis

Under LCSEE Graduate Studies Director Muhammad Choudhry, the college introduced focused concentrations to prepare students for key engineering and AI-related fields:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Computational Data Science: Intensive coursework in AI, machine learning, computing theory, and data analytics.
  • Cyber-Physical and Complex Systems: Integration of computing, sensing, signal processing, and control in applications like smart grids and automation.
  • Cybersecurity and Networked Systems: Prepares students for wireless communication, secure systems design, and network challenges.
  • Microelectronics and Embedded Systems: Focus on microchip design and resource-efficient embedded platforms.

These areas are open to students in computer science and electrical engineering disciplines.

Innovative Undergraduate Program Additions

The Statler College launched interdisciplinary undergraduate pathways to meet industry needs in AI, robotics, and data science. Two new dual degree programs link LCSEE with the Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering Department:

  • B.S. in Computer Engineering + Robotics Engineering
  • B.S. in Computer Science + Robotics Engineering

Both programs require 152–153 credit hours and equip students with expertise in computing and intelligent machine design, aligning with careers at the intersection of AI, automation, and technology.

New Undergraduate Area of Emphasis: Artificial Intelligence

Led by Brian Powell, this AI track offers targeted coursework in AI, machine learning, and data analytics. It enhances hands-on experience and prepares students for roles such as AI/ML engineer, data analyst, AI product associate, automation engineer, and junior data scientist.

Eligible majors include Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Robotics Engineering.
