NGA to train 50,000 young visual artists in AI-enabled practice
Date: 14 February 2026 - 1:02pm WAT
The National Gallery of Art (NGA) is launching a large-scale program to upskill 50,000 young visual artists with practical training in AI-enhanced creation. Announced by Director General Ahmed Sodangi at the SGF Innovative Hub in Mabushi, Abuja, the initiative coincided with the launch of the National Creatives AI Media Toolkit in partnership with AIDOS Studios.
The focus is simple: help artists blend technology with craft without losing their voice. Training will cover structure in artistic work and hands-on sessions with AI tools to speed up workflows, expand creative range, and strengthen presentation.
What the program offers
- Guided practice with AI tools for image generation, enhancement, and post-production-applied to real creative briefs.
- Training that centers on preserving artistic identity while using new methods to build out style, series, and stories.
- Access to financial support through the Social Good Fund to move projects from concept to market.
- Support for better communication and distribution so your work reaches the right audience, at the right time.
Why this matters for creatives
This move is about creative control and sustainability. By integrating technology with culture, the NGA wants artists and media professionals to build careers that last-rooted in personal narratives, strengthened by efficient production, and ready for global audiences.
Ahmed Sodangi said, "The creative industry in Nigeria has been flourishing for years, driven by the talent and passion of its people, often with minimal government intervention. However, the growth of this industry has reached a point where its influence is undeniable on the global stage. The government must partner with industry players. The Social Good Fund is an established framework that ensures business viability and access to funding for creative endeavours."
Pamela Williams, Chief Executive Officer of AIDOS CREATIONS, emphasized preservation, empowerment, and a stronger global presence: "Nigeria is abundant in talent, expression, and imagination. Our contributions to art, film, media, and digital content significantly impact global conversations. However, even the most compelling creative work needs effective communication, positioning, and sustainable support to make a lasting impression. This is precisely the gap the National Creatives AI Media Toolkit seeks to fill as we take intentional steps toward establishing Nigeria as a global leader in AI-enabled creative infrastructure."
How to get ready (before applications open)
- Define your visual niche and story. Clarity beats volume. Build a tight series that shows range within focus.
- Audit your workflow. Note where you spend the most time (ideation, drafting, refinement, output) and flag steps that AI could speed up.
- Practice prompt craft and iteration. Document prompts, seeds, and settings so you can reproduce results and evolve a signature.
- Protect your work. Track sources, rights, and metadata. Be clear on usage terms for assets you create and collect.
- Plan a funded project. Outline a clear concept, timeline, budget, and deliverables to be ready for Social Good Fund opportunities.
