NUS Law Introduces AI-Powered Legal Podcast for Wider Public Access
The Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS Law) has launched a world-first podcast series that transforms peer-reviewed legal research into accessible audio content. This series is based on articles from the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies (SJLS) and produced using Google's AI tool, NotebookLM.
By converting detailed academic articles into podcast episodes aimed at a general audience, NUS Law makes complex legal topics easier to grasp without losing intellectual rigor. This approach opens up legal scholarship beyond traditional readers.
Bringing Legal Research Closer to Society
Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, emphasised the institutionโs commitment to thought leadership and public engagement through this initiative. He highlighted the use of technology to extend the reach and relevance of legal research as a key step in bridging legal academia and society.
Established in 1959, the SJLS is a respected legal journal within the British Commonwealth, focusing on Singapore, Asia, and common-law jurisdictions. Managed by NUS Law and supported by an international Advisory Board, it covers a broad range of legal issues, from domestic laws to international developments.
Expanding the Audience
Traditionally read by lawyers, academics, and legal professionals, the podcast aims to benefit a wider audience including business leaders and policymakers. While full articles remain fully accessible on the SJLS website, the podcast offers concise summaries to encourage interest from those outside the legal field.
- Accessible summaries of peer-reviewed legal research
- Produced with AI technology for efficiency and clarity
- Free availability on Spotify with regular new episodes
Positive Reception from Legal Scholars
Professor Julien Chaisse from City University of Hong Kong praised the podcast format for making academic legal writing more approachable without compromising substance. Professor Emilios Avgouleas of the University of Edinburgh called it an impressive use of modern technology to broaden access to legal and interdisciplinary scholarship.
