Local councils are spending millions on AI-what's the real risk-reward?

Nine councils have formal AI policies in place and three have committed to develop them. Only a handful have not clearly committed to human-in-the-loop checks.

Caution vs momentum: finding the line
AI optimism shouldn't be blind. Experts stress that humans must stay in the loop and that councils should be upfront about AI assistance. At the same time, New Zealand's overall use and trust of AI ranks low internationally, and over-weighting the downside could stall useful progress.
The balanced approach: prove value with tight pilots, measure outcomes, keep oversight strong, and scale what works.
