Grand Erie District School Board and Conestoga College Launch Ontario’s First AI Micro-Credential

The Grand Erie District School Board has introduced Ontario’s first artificial intelligence micro-credential within the public education sector. This initiative was developed in collaboration with Conestoga College to equip education professionals with relevant AI knowledge and skills.

The micro-credential is a voluntary, asynchronous, 10-hour online course available to all Grand Erie employees starting this September. It offers flexible learning that fits various schedules, allowing staff to grow professionally while managing their responsibilities.

Course Content and Structure

The program covers foundational AI topics such as:

  • The basics of artificial intelligence
  • AI tools and their responsible use
  • Ethical considerations surrounding AI
  • Customized learning pathways for academic staff, administrators, and non-teaching employees

This approach ensures the content is directly relevant to the different roles within the school board, supporting practical application in everyday work.

Partnership and Vision

John Tibbits, president of Conestoga College, highlighted the shared goal of preparing today’s workforce for future demands. By making AI education accessible, the partnership supports ongoing development within the education system as technologies continue to evolve.

The course development involved input from Grand Erie staff to align with the board’s strategic priorities and workplace realities. Successful participants receive a certificate from both Grand Erie and Conestoga upon completion.

Supporting AI Integration in Education

This micro-credential follows the launch of an AI policy, procedures, and guidelines for the school community. Alongside ongoing professional learning, these measures aim to equip staff with the knowledge and tools necessary to support students effectively.

JoAnna Roberto, director of education at Grand Erie, emphasized the importance of preparing staff for how AI will influence both teaching and career planning.

For education professionals interested in expanding AI skills further, a variety of AI courses tailored to education roles are available to explore.
