OpenAI Breaks Ground on $16 Billion Michigan Data Center
OpenAI held a groundbreaking ceremony on June 1 for "The Barn," a $16 billion data center in Saline Township, Michigan. The 250-acre facility will be developed by Related Companies and operated by Oracle as part of OpenAI's Stargate project to expand AI infrastructure across the country.
The event drew OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and representatives from construction and real estate firms including Blackstone and Walbridge.
Local Opposition and Legal Settlement
Saline Township residents voted 4-1 against rezoning farmland for the project in 2025. Developers sued the township to overturn the decision, and the two sides reached a settlement that allowed construction to proceed despite public opposition.
Ben Schaaf, a Saline resident, told local media the facility does not align with community interests. "This is something that's going to have a multi-generational impact on folks in this community, including our children," he said.
State Support and Energy Concerns
Governor Whitmer has positioned Michigan as the preferable location for data center development. She argued in April that data centers will be built regardless, and Michigan's consumer protection standards make it a better choice than alternatives.
"If we can hold them to a high standard and do it in Michigan, that's the best way to do it," Whitmer said on June 2. "Not watch them go everywhere else and do it in a really bad way."
Whitmer cited the state's approach to protecting natural resources, particularly water, as a distinguishing factor. She has not posted about The Barn on social media.
What Altman Promised
Altman said the project could benefit local businesses, students, and residents. He framed the facility as a test case for community-friendly data center development.
"My hope is that this becomes an example for the world where the world can benefit greatly from AI out of a data center like this," Altman said. "And the local community can be thrilled with the decision."
Altman acknowledged the complexity of the undertaking. "This is a huge bet, and this is something that is not an easy project," he said.
