OpenAI plans to nearly double workforce to 8,000 by end of 2026
OpenAI will hire roughly 3,500 new employees over the next nine months, expanding its headcount from 4,500 to 8,000 by the end of 2026, the Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing two people with knowledge of the plan.
The company will deploy most new hires across product development, engineering, research, and sales. OpenAI is also recruiting specialists in "technical ambassadorship" to help businesses use its tools more effectively.
Context
OpenAI's expansion comes after the company's latest funding round valued it at $840 billion. The round included investments from major tech companies and Masayoshi Son's Softbank, bringing total funding to $110 billion.
In December, CEO Sam Altman issued an internal "code red," pausing non-core projects and redirecting teams to accelerate development work. The move followed the release of Google's Gemini 3.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the hiring plan.
