OpenAI closes $122 billion funding round, valuation hits $852 billion

OpenAI raised $122 billion in committed capital, valuing the company at $852 billion. The round was led by Amazon, NVIDIA, and SoftBank, with Microsoft continuing its investment. The company is now generating $2 billion in revenue per month, up from $1 billion quarterly at the end of 2024.

ChatGPT has 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million subscribers. The platform reaches 6 times more monthly web visits and mobile sessions than the next largest AI app. OpenAI reached $1 billion in annual revenue faster than any technology company before it, and is growing revenue four times faster than Alphabet and Meta did during their growth phases.

Enterprise revenue accelerating

Enterprise now accounts for more than 40% of OpenAI's revenue and is on track to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. The company's APIs process more than 15 billion tokens per minute.

Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, serves over 2 million weekly users, up fivefold in three months. Usage is growing 70% month over month. The tool helps developers turn ideas into working software through API access.

Compute strategy expands beyond NVIDIA

OpenAI is building infrastructure across multiple cloud providers and chip platforms. NVIDIA remains the foundation-the company's training fleet and inference stack run primarily on NVIDIA GPUs. But the company is now also using AMD, AWS Trainium, and Cerebras chips, plus developing its own silicon in partnership with Broadcom.

Cloud partnerships include Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, CoreWeave, and Google Cloud. Data center partnerships span Oracle, SBE, and SoftBank. This diversified approach gives OpenAI flexibility as demand for AI systems grows and becomes more varied.

New model and product updates

OpenAI launched GPT-5.4, which the company calls its most capable model. The update includes gains in intelligence and workflow performance. The company also expanded memory, search, personalization, and multimodal interaction capabilities.

Search usage on ChatGPT nearly tripled in a year. An ads pilot reached more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue in under six weeks.

Retail investor access and credit facility

For the first time, OpenAI extended funding participation to individual investors through bank channels, raising over $3 billion. ARK Invest is adding OpenAI to several exchange-traded funds, broadening public ownership.

The company expanded its revolving credit facility to approximately $4.7 billion. The facility is backed by a global syndicate including JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, and others. The facility remains undrawn.

Building toward an AI superapp

OpenAI plans to unify ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and agentic capabilities into a single agent-first product. The company sees this as both a distribution strategy and a way to translate model improvements directly into user adoption.

Consumer familiarity with the unified product is intended to drive workplace adoption, since people use tools at work that they already know from daily life. A single product surface also allows faster iteration and more coherent shipping.
