OpenAI targets independent AI researchers by 2028
OpenAI is building AI systems capable of performing research tasks with minimal human oversight. Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki said the company's AI has improved significantly at coding and solving math problems while requiring less human intervention.
The company has set two milestones: an "AI research intern" by September 2026, followed by a fully independent AI researcher by March 2028.
Tools like Codex currently handle much of OpenAI's programming work. Pachocki acknowledged gaps remain before AI can operate autonomously in research settings.
CEO Sam Altman emphasized the need for transparency about these capabilities, given their potential societal implications.
