Pennsylvania Advances Two Bills to Protect Residents From AI Risks

Pennsylvania lawmakers have approved legislation aimed at educating residents about artificial intelligence scams and protecting children from digital threats. The House passed House Bill 2314 by a vote of 198-3, while the Senate approved Senate Resolution 244.

HB 2314 would fund a statewide public education campaign on AI and consumer safety. The initiative targets AI-related scams, identity theft, and online safety risks, and would provide parents with resources to protect children from emerging technology threats.

Attorney General Dave Sunday said the bill addresses a fundamental problem: awareness. "The most effective way to prevent scams and ID theft is to be aware of today's technology and how it can cause harm," he said in a statement.

The House bill now moves to the Senate for final approval before it can become law.

Task Force to Examine Child Protection Gaps

Senate Resolution 244, which has already taken effect, creates a Child Protection in the Digital Age Task Force led by the Attorney General's office. The task force will examine how technology is affecting children and whether existing laws adequately address new digital threats.

The Attorney General's office has increased its focus on AI for Government and online safety in recent months. The office participated in a multistate effort examining AI chatbots and their interactions with young users.

Sunday said the effort is critical. "Ensuring our laws protecting children keep pace with rapid changes in technology is a mission critical to the Office of Attorney General," he said.

The Attorney General's office also conducts public outreach on social media and digital safety through its Office of Public Engagement, and has launched programs focused on AI for Education and child protection online.
