AI voice cloning scams are targeting families - here's what you need to know
Scammers are using artificial intelligence to clone voices from just a few seconds of audio, then impersonating family members to extract money. A Pikesville man's father fell victim to the scheme, prompting a warning about the growing threat.
Michael Bresler's father received a call appearing to be from his son, claiming he was in the hospital and police custody for a DUI. The caller demanded money and even used a family nickname the scammer had somehow obtained.
Bresler noticed red flags that saved his family money. He questioned why his brother - who doesn't drink - would face a DUI charge. He also asked who they'd be sending money to, since bail would involve a hearing.
How the scam works
Voice cloning technology requires minimal audio. Scammers can extract a few seconds from a voicemail, social media video, or phone recording to recreate someone's voice using AI.
Matt Mazenko, managing director at Nomorobo, a spam-blocking service, said scammers exploit three tactics: emotion, urgency, and the threat of loss. A family member in crisis hits all three.
What to do if you receive a call
Hang up and call the person back directly at a number you know is correct. Don't use a number the caller provided.
Establish a code word or security question with family members beforehand. Bresler asked his brother a question only he would know from childhood - a technique that confirmed the caller's identity.
Download a call-blocking app. Report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.
Don't feel embarrassed if you nearly fall victim. These scams are becoming more common as the technology becomes easier to access.
