Pilgrim's Europe acquires Hermitage AI to tighten control of pig genetics operations

Pilgrim's Europe has acquired Hermitage AI Ltd, including its Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire operations. A new operating agreement with Hermitage Group and PIC UK keeps the UK boar studs in Boston and Willingham running without interruption.

Operational responsibility for the two genetic transfer centers will move from Hermitage to Pilgrim's Europe, with 16 staff joining the Pilgrim's team. Hermitage AI has been a long-standing supplier of high-quality semen for breeding farms, and this move brings that capability in-house.

Ivan Siqueira, President of Pilgrim's Europe, said: "Integrating a pig genetics supply chain will enable continuous gains in production efficiency, meat quality, animal health and resilience, delivering long-term benefits for our customers and UK consumers. We also look forward to working in partnership with PIC UK to safeguard the long-term future of elite genetic delivery in the UK."

Ned Nolan, CEO of Hermitage Group, added: "We will coordinate closely with the Pilgrim's team to ensure a smooth management handover covering all aspects of the operation. Hermitage Group will continue its broader working relationship with PIC, and we will continue to supply boars to the UK GTC operations."

Craig Lewis, commercial director of PIC, said: "This evolution in operational stewardship secures the long-term availability of PIC's high-quality boar genetics for UK pig producers, a key factor in supporting competitiveness across the national pork supply chain. Pilgrim's Europe has extensive global expertise in boar stud management, and we look forward to working together to maintain consistent, high-value services to PIC UK customers and the wider UK pig industry, today and into the future."

What this means for operations leaders

  • Single-point accountability across genetics, collection, processing and delivery. Fewer handoffs, clearer ownership.
  • Standardized SOPs across Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire to reduce variability and downtime in the studs and GTCs.
  • Tighter demand planning for doses by farm and week, with cold-chain capacity matched to peaks and seasonal swings.
  • Data continuity between Pilgrim's, Hermitage Group and PIC to protect traceability and genetic integrity.
  • Stronger biosecurity, QA and animal health protocols aligned to national standards, with clear escalation paths.
  • Route and schedule optimization for deliveries to cut spoilage risk and transport cost per viable dose.

90-day handover priorities

  • Define governance: decision rights, RACI, and on-call coverage for GTC operations.
  • Onboard the 16 incoming staff with cross-training on Pilgrim's systems, welfare policies and incident response.
  • Facility audits at Boston and Willingham: HVAC/airflow integrity, power backup, sanitation cycles, pest control.
  • Stabilize service levels to breeding farms: confirm minimum fill rates, lead-time targets and substitution rules.
  • Map the end-to-end cold chain: time-out-of-refrigeration windows, packaging performance and handover checkpoints.
  • Integrate IT/OT: batch IDs, QC data (motility, morphology, concentration), and lot genealogy into a single source of truth.
  • Align procurement for critical consumables (extenders, filters, PPE) with dual sourcing and safety stocks.
  • Rehearse biosecurity drills and animal health incident playbooks with PIC UK and Hermitage Group contacts.
  • Update regulatory compliance files and customer SLAs to reflect the new operating entity.

KPIs to watch

  • Order fill rate to breeding farms (%) and on-time, in-full.
  • Average lead time from collection to delivery (hours) and cold-chain excursion rate.
  • QC pass rate per batch: motility, morphology, bacterial counts within spec.
  • Non-conformance rate and rework per 1,000 doses.
  • Stud uptime (%) and planned vs. unplanned maintenance hours.
  • Animal health incident frequency and response time.
  • Cost per viable dose and transport cost per route.
  • Staff retention and cross-skill coverage across critical shifts.

Risk radar and mitigations

  • Service disruption during transition: freeze a conservative production plan, stage inventory where feasible and add buffer routes.
  • Data gaps or mismatches: run dual systems for two cycles and reconcile batch genealogy before cutover.
  • Genetic allocation errors: implement electronic pick/pack verification with two-person checks for elite lines.
  • Biosecurity breach: tighten visitor, vehicle and sanitation controls; audit adherence weekly.
  • Regulatory slippage: pre-schedule inspections, lock document control and training logs.
  • Stakeholder confidence: publish a temporary dashboard to PIC UK customers covering fill rate, QC and incident status.

Operational upside to target over 12 months

  • Consistent 95%+ fill rate with fewer emergency shipments.
  • 10-20% reduction in average lead time through route consolidation and better slotting.
  • Lower non-conformance and discard rates through tighter process capability and preventive maintenance.
  • Improved energy use per dose by tuning HVAC schedules and heat recovery in studs.
  • Clear genetic traceability chain that reduces investigation time when issues occur.
