Legal Profession Adopts First Industry-Wide AI Competency Framework
The Practising Law Institute released a competency framework for AI use in legal practice, establishing shared standards for what it means to work competently with artificial intelligence. The framework organizes AI readiness into five areas: AI Fluency, AI-Enhanced Legal Work, Critical Oversight, Ethical AI Governance, and Professional Evolution.
The framework identifies 20 specific competencies, each with three proficiency levels: Emerging, Practicing, and Leading. It applies to law firms, in-house departments, law schools, bar associations, and individual lawyers.
Why This Matters Now
As AI tools become standard in legal work, the profession lacked a shared definition of competent use. Firms and lawyers had no common language for evaluating AI skills or building training programs. This framework fills that gap.
"AI competence is no longer optional - it's becoming part of what it means to practice law effectively," said Kirsten Talmage, Chief Strategy Officer at PLI. "What's been missing is a shared, practical way to define what competent AI use actually looks like."
Who Needs to Know This
The framework is designed for practical application, not tool-specific training. Organizations can map it to hiring assessments, curricula, evaluation rubrics, and career progression expectations.
The framework does not require every lawyer to become an AI expert. Instead, it defines what AI readiness looks like across different roles and experience levels.
What's Included
PLI developed the framework with its Innovation Council, the Professional Development Consortium, and Creative Lawyers. The work builds on PLI's recent initiatives: an expanded AI-focused CLE program, original thought leadership, and partnerships across the legal sector.
The framework is available at PLI.edu.
