POET Technologies Inc., a Toronto-based company specializing in Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), optical modules, and light sources for AI and data center applications, has been honored with the “AI Hardware Innovation Award” at the 8th annual AI Breakthrough Awards.
This award highlights POET’s Teralight™ optical engines, known for ultra-high performance in AI and hyperscale data-center connectivity. This is the second year in a row that POET has received recognition from the AI Breakthrough Awards, marking their sixth major honor in the last 12 months.
What Makes POET Teralight™ Stand Out?
Teralight™ optical engines feature a highly integrated, wafer-level chip-scale design. Each engine—both transmit and receive—is about 12x12 mm in size, combining a 1.6T transmit optical engine and a 1.6T receive optical engine. The design eliminates wire bonds, reducing signal noise and improving energy efficiency.
One key advantage is that a single design team can develop both 1.6T DR8 and 2xFR4 pluggable modules using the same board design and manufacturing process, simplifying production and reducing costs.
- The transmit engine uses 2x200G EML lasers from Mitsubishi Electric, requiring only four laser chips instead of the usual eight.
- A DC-coupled EML driver is flip-chip attached to the POET Optical Interposer™, enhancing performance.
- Integrated high-speed electrical traces and optical waveguides minimize crosstalk and maximize coupling efficiency.
These features contributed to the jury's decision to select Teralight™ as the top AI Hardware Innovation.
