Powerstock CE Primary School Introduces AI Education for Pupils

Pupils at Powerstock CE VA Primary School in west Dorset are among the first in the UK to receive formal education in artificial intelligence (AI). The school has developed an innovative curriculum that introduces Year 3 and 4 students to key concepts about AI, its uses, and ethical considerations.

The six-session unit, called AI Explorers: What Can Machines Do?, uses iPads and ChatGPT to deliver age-appropriate lessons. This approach combines creativity, digital literacy, and ethical awareness—skills that are increasingly essential for children growing up today.

Teaching AI Early with Practical Focus

Headteacher Nicholas Harris shared, “We told the children they were going to be one of the first classes in the country to formally learn about AI—because it’s true. AI is already shaping the world they’ll grow up in. We’re not waiting until secondary school to give them the tools to understand and question it. We’re starting now, with curiosity, care, and critical thinking.”

The curriculum was created in-house, aligning with the national Teach Computing scheme. It is one of the first AI units designed for lower Key Stage 2 pupils (ages 7–9). Lessons cover what AI is and isn’t, how to communicate effectively with chatbots, and how to recognize incorrect or biased responses. Importantly, pupils also learn about safe, respectful, and responsible AI use.

Balancing Technology with Ethics and Wellbeing

The work at Powerstock has attracted attention from local education leaders. The school aims to integrate technology thoughtfully without compromising ethics or student wellbeing.

Mr. Harris explains, “It’s not about replacing teaching or chasing the latest trend. It’s about preparing children to live wisely in a world where AI will be everywhere. That starts with asking good questions, understanding the technology, and using it for good.”

Expanding AI Learning Across the School

This AI unit is part of a broader digital curriculum, with similar lessons being developed for Year 5 and 6 students. All AI use is supervised carefully, employing age-appropriate tools to maintain safety.
