PTC advances ALM with AI built for regulated product development
PTC has rolled out three updates to its application lifecycle management portfolio: Codebeamer 3.2, Codebeamer AI 1.0, and Pure Variants 7.2. The goal is simple: make traceability stronger, change management cleaner, and bring governed AI into requirements and testing for teams working under strict standards.
"Our customers' products are becoming increasingly complex and software-driven, and they need confidence that every change, requirement, and decision is connected across the product lifecycle," said Enrique Krajmalnik, General Manager of ALM at PTC. "Codebeamer 3.2, Codebeamer AI 1.0, and Pure Variants 7.2 will help our clients modernise software development and requirements management by building a stronger product data foundation for managing complexity and applying AI effectively and responsibly."
What's new for product teams
- Digital thread integrations: Codebeamer now connects with PTC's Windchillยฎ and other enterprise systems so software and hardware changes share the same traceable path. Teams can link requirements, manage change, and maintain compliance from concept through release.
- Stream Baselines: Capture full snapshots of every project within a development stream. This gives you consistent baselines, simpler identification of relevant project states, and cleaner portfolio-level change control.
- Review Hub upgrades: Bulk approve or reject items, get clearer notifications, and see visual diffs to speed up reviews without losing context.
- Pure Variants 7.2: Feature-Based Product Line Engineering automates stream and stream baseline creation. Delta Merge (Beta) supports concurrent work across platforms and product variants.
Governed AI assistants in Codebeamer AI 1.0
PTC is introducing two AI assistants focused on quality and speed where it matters most: requirements and testing.
- Requirements Assistant: Automatically flags requirement quality issues based on guidance from INCOSE. It helps teams write clearer, standards-aligned requirements faster, reducing reliance on time-consuming expert reviews.
- Test Case Assistant: Generates and optimises test cases directly from requirements. This tightens traceability, improves accuracy, and accelerates validation.
"We built Codebeamer AI to help simplify and streamline time-consuming tasks within the requirements development process," said Joseph June, Global Head of AI Innovation at PTC. "By working alongside engineers in real time, Codebeamer AI brings greater clarity and consistency to everyday decisions, helping teams move faster with confidence and keep pace with modern, software-driven product development."
For testing leaders, alignment with industry testing principles matters. You can connect these workflows with training and best practices from the ISTQB to keep terminology and expectations consistent across teams.
Why this matters if you build regulated products
- Full-lifecycle traceability: Digital thread links software and hardware so audits don't become archaeology. Every change has context.
- Confident change control: Stream Baselines create clean snapshots you can reference during reviews, releases, and investigations.
- Variant management at scale: Feature-Based PLE and Delta Merge help you manage platforms and product families without drowning in branch overhead.
- Governed AI: AI assistance aligns with established standards and keeps humans in the loop, supporting compliance and quality objectives.
How to put this to work now
- Connect Codebeamer with Windchill and your issue/source systems to enforce end-to-end traceability across software and hardware.
- Define baseline policies per release train and use Stream Baselines to lock, label, and audit project states.
- Adopt the Requirements Assistant as a standard quality check and align your rules with INCOSE guidance.
- Auto-generate test cases from requirements, link them bi-directionally, and track coverage and defect leakage as core metrics.
- Pilot Delta Merge with a small platform/variant slice, set guardrails, and expand once conflict patterns are understood.
- Update review workflows to use bulk actions and visual diffs so senior reviewers spend time on risk, not clicks.
- Document AI governance: who reviews AI suggestions, what thresholds require human approval, and how audit logs are retained.
Part of PTC's Intelligent Product Lifecycle
Codebeamer and Pure Variants sit alongside other AI-enabled products in PTC's stack, including Windchill AI and ServiceMax AI. The focus is consistent: scale AI across the product lifecycle while keeping compliance and governance intact.
