Qatar’s Infrastructure Poised for AI Integration in Urban Planning
Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries stand out with infrastructure ready to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in urban planning, according to HE Minister Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Attiyah. At the Qatar Economic Forum, he emphasized the GCC’s unique position to lead in smart city development and practical AI applications.
“The Middle East is well-prepared to invest heavily in AI,” al-Attiyah said. “We have modern infrastructure, the lowest energy costs globally, and all necessary data center facilities.” He highlighted the importance of flexibility in real estate, suggesting diversification from offices to apartments and from databases to sectors like energy transition and healthcare.
Real Estate and AI: Emerging Opportunities
Al-Attiyah pointed out how global investment trends have shifted rapidly. “Two years ago, health services were the focus due to the pandemic. Now, databases and AI are at the forefront.” He sees real estate as a solid investment, especially as interest rates decline and demand for quality office spaces returns post-pandemic.
Despite geopolitical uncertainties and trade pressures, the minister urged timely investment: “If you don’t invest now, when will you?”
Collaboration Over Competition in the Gulf
Addressing concerns about regional competition, al-Attiyah described the Gulf as “one country” working together. Qatar benefits from Saudi Arabia’s booming investments and tourist inflows, while also collaborating closely with Dubai. This synergy strengthens infrastructure and real estate across borders.
Qatar’s Commitment to Safe, Smart Living
Qatar prides itself on safety and quality education, aiming to build communities where daily life is hassle-free. Al-Attiyah stressed the country’s smart city initiatives, noting the absence of heavy security measures in schools and the advanced urban environments visitors experience.
The Qatar National Vision 2030 plays a key role here. Although the country started its infrastructure development later than others, it leveraged expertise from top global consultants from the US, Singapore, and the UK. This collaboration has produced world-class infrastructure, rich in data—a critical element for AI’s success.
Real Estate: Quality and Location Remain Key
Al-Attiyah affirmed that real estate demand will persist. “Quality and location matter most. Real estate is tied to the economy but always offers returns.” With the return to offices, demand for high-quality workspaces is increasing worldwide, reinforcing real estate’s appeal as an investment.
He summed it up with a local saying: “Real estate can get ill, but it will never die.”
