Relativity acquires Gavel to integrate legal drafting directly into Microsoft Word

Relativity acquired AI-native legal technology company Gavel on June 12, 2026, to connect document drafting directly to its evidence analysis platform. The move targets Microsoft Word, aiming to eliminate the workflow gap between the data lawyers review and the contracts or briefs they ultimately file.

Closing the drafting gap

RelativityOne currently serves as a system of action for teams to organize and analyze evidence. However, the resulting motions, briefs, and contracts have historically remained isolated in word processors, separate from the data that shaped them. Gavel's technology will allow work product generated by Relativity aiR to open, edit, and redline directly inside Word. This integration brings familiar Office Tools directly into the legal workflow, allowing lawyers to refine and finalize documents without leaving their primary drafting environment. Every change will sync back to the specific matter in the platform, maintaining a connected experience.

Beyond e-discovery

The acquisition reflects a broader shift in AI for Legal, moving the focus from simply finding information faster to generating finished work products directly. Relativity is expanding beyond its traditional e-discovery roots to influence the day-to-day practice of law. "We believe that Relativity's role as a driving force in legal AI innovation requires investing in the technology and people that create real value for our customers and partners," said Phil Saunders, CEO of Relativity. "This acquisition enhances our ability to support a wider arc of legal work, in the place where lawyers spend most of their time."

Gavel's origins and integration

Dorna Moini founded Gavel after building document automation tools for pro bono clients during her time as an associate at Sidley Austin LLP. The company now serves legal teams across 28 countries, using generative AI and rules-based workflows to support drafting, contract review, and redlining. "Joining Relativity gives us an unrivaled opportunity to scale our shared vision for the industry, build faster and bring our technology to more legal teams," said Moini, Founder and CEO of Gavel. Relativity plans to maintain Gavel's regular operations while gradually integrating its capabilities into RelativityOne.

Why this matters for legal professionals

Lawyers will no longer have to manually transfer context from e-discovery platforms into standalone word processors. By syncing Word edits directly back to the central platform, firms can ensure that final contracts and briefs remain tethered to the specific evidence and matter context that informed them. This reduces version control errors and administrative friction during the drafting and negotiation phases.
